Common theory questions

May a car fitted with non-studded winter tyres tow a trailer fitted with studded winter tyres?

Yes, a car fitted with non-studded winter tyres may tow a trailer fitted with studded winter tyres.

When you are required to use winter tyres and winter road conditions apply, the following rules apply:

You are allowed to:

  • Use studded tyres on the car and studded tyres on the trailer.
  • Use non-studded winter tyres on the car and studded tyres on the trailer.
  • Use non-studded tyres on the car and non-studded tyres on the trailer.

You are not allowed to:

  • Use studded tyres on the car and non-studded tyres on the trailer.
  • Use summer tyres on the car or trailer.

In other words, a trailer must have tyres that are as good or better than those on the car towing it.
