How do you jump start a car?

Before you jump start a car you must ensure that both batteries have the same rated voltage and that the jumper cables are connected correctly. A mistake can cause a short-circuit, which can destroy the battery, the alternator and other electronic equipment in the car.

Important: Always consult the instruction manual before attempting to jump start your car.

How to jump start a car:

  1. Connect the positive terminals with the red clips.
  2. Attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal on the assisting car's battery.
  3. Attach the last black clip to an unpainted metal surface – far from the battery* – on the car that needs starting assistance.
  4. Start the assisting car and let the engine run a few minutes.
  5. Start the car that needs starting assistance.
  6. Disconnect the jumper cables in reverse order.

* This is to avoid any sparks from causing an oxyhydrogen gas explosion.
