Before you jump start a car you must ensure that both batteries have the same rated voltage and that the jumper cables are connected correctly. A mistake can cause a short-circuit, which can destroy the battery, the alternator and other electronic equipment in the car.
Important: Always consult the instruction manual before attempting to jump start your car.
How to jump start a car:
- Connect the positive terminals with the red clips.
- Attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal on the assisting car's battery.
- Attach the last black clip to an unpainted metal surface – far from the battery* – on the car that needs starting assistance.
- Start the assisting car and let the engine run a few minutes.
- Start the car that needs starting assistance.
- Disconnect the jumper cables in reverse order.
* This is to avoid any sparks from causing an oxyhydrogen gas explosion.
