Common theory questions

How do you usually perform a left turn on a country road with a lot of traffic?

If you are unsure whether a left turn can be performed safely, or if there is too much traffic, you have four options:

  1. You can procced straight ahead, turn around at a suitable place and return to the junction – where you now can turn right instead.
  2. You can turn right (if it is possible), turn around at a suitable place and drive straight across the junction instead.
  3. You can slow down well in advance of the left turn to let vehicles behind you overtake.
  4. You can drive out onto the hard shoulder, reduce your speed and let vehicles behind you pass. Before turning left you must first return to the carriageway and position your car close to the centre line. Do not turn left directly from the hard shoulder!
